Roughly, after 1 week without moisture your grass with begin to show signs of distress. Depending on the time of year, you can rely on the rain to keep your lawns thirst at bay. However during the hotter months, you may have to step in and do some watering of your own. We would recommend watering your grass heavily once or maximum twice a week. Please bare in mind if you water too frequently you can actually do further damage and reduce your lawns drought tolerance, and therefore providing more work for yourself! No one wants their grass to over rely on them!

Have you got any tips to help with my grass going through a dry spell?

  1. If your lawn has dried out or hardened, it will have trouble absorbing any moisture. Make sure that before watering, you spike some holes in the ground with a garden fork to allow the water to seep in.
  2. Water your grass in the morning or in the middle of the afternoon, but not when the sun is at its hottest. If you water the grass at night, it can leave it vulnerable to lawn disease.
  3. When needing to mow the lawn when it is dry, continue to do so but raise the lawn mowers height. If you cut the grass to short whilst it is dry will make it weaker and less drought tolerant.

How often should I cut my grass?

Generally, lawns should be mown weekly to fortnightly between the months of March and October, to keep them in good condition and to keep our garden looking tidy. Regular mowing helps to get rid of those pesky unwanted weeds and also encourages turf denseness. However, depending on what style of lawn you want and at what speed your grass is growing, will really depend on when you cut it.

How can I get a striped lawn? I can’t seem to do it

We see them everywhere, and once getting the hang of it, a striped lawn will be second nature! Ensure your mower has a rear roller, as a wheeled rotary mower won’t provide the best quality striping. Always start by mowing the edge of the lawn, then work from the left side, mowing up and down your lawn using the straight lawn edge as a guide. Then, at each turn, make sure you have lined up the mower from the previous stripe, so that it overlaps. The biggest tip would be to empty the clipping box regularly!
